POTD | Woo! Back from London

Wow, I need some time not zooming across the ocean. As exciting as it sounds to be in Europe three times within 8 weeks, the reality is that I am tired and longing for more Tex-Mex and Margs and friend time.

Not that the trips were not fun and fantastic, because they were all amazing (especially seeing family and a delightful English wedding this past weekend), but the travel part is a cruel mistress. Everything suffers - work, the house, etc.

Savannah takes it all in stride though. Here she is outside our latest hotel. Travel = not a problem for Little S.

I was telling her that I was looking forward to some time at home today and she said that she wished we could travel all the time. I am happy about that attitude because it will surely serve her well in the years to come. A five year old with an impressive set of stamps in her passport is never a bad thing and we are so grateful we've been able to supply those experiences for her.

POTD | Petite Ecole graduation

Oh Petite Ecole, how we love you so.

It has been such an amazing Pre-K/Preschool experience for Savannah and us. There is something about this school that attracts a diverse, very 'Austin' crowd and I (and Savannah) am so glad that I have had the opportunity to meet these familes and kids. We love them SO much and are crushed that we won't be with them all next year.

My child speaks French fluently and I had a peaceful feeling dropping her off each morning for two years. The teachers love her almost as much as we do and that feeling is worth more than gold.

The school is very good about making a big deal about milestones - birthdays are a day long celebration and graduation is awesome! The kids spend a month making 'Goodbye books' where they write a special page to each graduate. I will keep this graduation book forever - it's so darling. The teacher says a bit about each student. (Savannah's story was how she kept shouting 'SPEAK ENGLISH!' the first three weeks she was there) and there is a presentation of the book and a flower.

Then the kids sing a song and we have a potluck. LOVE. THIS. SCHOOL. If you are in Austin and want a safe and happy place for your children, I can't recommend it enough.

Viva Petite Ecole!

We are home | Conflicting Feelings on Pop Art

We are home!!!

So many stories and photos to come, but no photo that makes me laugh harder than this one of Savannah in front of a giant Warhol at The Pompidou Center.

Swimkana

The final day of swim class is called Swimkana. It is a BIG deal because you get a trophy and parents are allowed in to the pool area to watch class. Did I mention the trophy? Because I think Savannah mentioned it about 2700 times in the weeks leading up to the last class.

Savannah has come a LONG way from last year's Swimkana. Last May she wouldn't even put her face in the water and this year, she jumped off the side, knows the breast stroke, freestyle and backstroke and loves to play in the pool. FINALLY!

She was in a group with all boys and I think their more athletic nature really helped to push her a bit. Just today she was telling me how much she missed 'those boys'.

We are very proud of how far she's come.

Blogger is hateful | POTD | A Snow Cone

It has been since May 8th that I have been able to upload photos to Blogger. Blerg. I am considering a big switch to a dedicated domain for the blog, but we shall see. For now, we will limp along with Blogger....

For now, enjoy a snow cone after swim class. Coming soon...a billion things.

Kindergarten Meet and Greet | Where does the time go?

Saturday, we had the first playdate/meet and greet with Savannah's Kindergaren classmates. First of all, how wonderful is that? Kindergarten is scary and unknown enough to begin with and the fact that she'll know these girls a little bit befre the first day of school is such a relief to her. We could eliminate the 'What if no one likes me?' fear right off the bat. Because, as expected, that was not a problem.

The girls are diverse and lovely, as are the parents. Amazingly enough, a friend of Conor's and mine from high school is the parent of one of Savannah's classmates. It was SO great to catch up with him and meeting his gorgeous girls and awesome wife (We are going to be friends, I'll tell you that right now).

You have your Mama's girls, the loud ones, the quiet ones, the funny ones, the tall ones, the tiny ones. You can see how the Kindergarten class was 'composed' by the admissions director. It's a nice blend. We all wanted to make a good impression and have our daughters make a good impression. I could quite easily put other parents at ease be retelling the 'Oh MY kid threw her shoes at me during the group evaluation.' Other parents LOVE those stories. I know I do. It makes me feel normal and human as a parent to share the 'Oh MY kid...' stories.

We had a lot of fun watching the girls work together and see how different from boys they are. It's a lot of teamwork and imagination and less jumping off of things and shooting. It's not better, just different. It was funny to see how the playground was very quiet for about 10 minutes and then the conversations started and the groups broke off and mixed and mingled.

At one point, one of the parents said "I hope they get along, because they'll be together for NINE years."

That seems so long from now, but I can honestly remember the day we brought Savannah home from the hospital and the fact that we were so terrified that she would be cold, so we bundled her up in this giant snowsuit and THEN didn't know how to loosen the straps on her carseat, so we just stuffed her into it and she was like a salami that couldn't move her limbs in that thing the whole way home.

I remember having NO idea how to put her into the stroller despite reading the manual 100 times. I remember sobbing the first time I dropped her off at Mother's Day Out. The two years she's been at Petite Ecole are just a blink. My kid speaks French now! How did that happen so quickly? She barely fits in my lap and I have a hard time carrying her at this point. I used to have to sing her to sleep.

I find myself mentally photographing the times she stops to lay on my lap or asks for a hug or a kiss or holds my hand in public or tells me that I am the best Mama of all the Mamas, because I am holding my breath in anticipation of the first time she is totally embarrassed to be seen in public with me. I get that these things are going to happen. I know they are part of the development of a human girl, but I can't help feeling like it's going to be tomorrow that my girl is graduating from The Girls' School and is on to high school and prom and college at The Sorbonne and we'll be telling stories about the first day she met her classmates at The Girls' School playground like it was 15 minutes ago.

I am not someone who wants time to stop, because she is a more amazing person each day I know her, but seriously, how do moments turn into years SO quickly?

Designer K

I got the roster and family info of Savannah's kindergarten class yesterday and while I know I will end up loving all these girls to pieces, I did snicker a little when I saw all the names.

Granted, we have a kid named Savannah, which is not the most traditional name in the world, but this roster has nary a Jennifer or Amy or Lisa in sight. More like Zofia and Sloane and Cecily and Olivia.

I got some some new lenses and Savannah is a theater manager.

So I get a TON of boxes from my photo lab. I do my best to recycle them and reuse them, but sometimes, you just have to make a puppet theater out of a large 20-24 order. I feel very eco. Savannah has upcycled the box into her theater. Watch when she gets irritated and yelled 'No Photography!!" Heh!

I also have upgraded a few lenses and guess who is always the new model? I always tell her she'll thank me later for taking so  many photos.
